Apple’s iPhone 13 range will have a much earlier release this year and, while there are some controversial design decisions, there is no doubt about its biggest upgrade. Now we know more about it, both good and bad.

In an exclusive new video, popular YouTuber Filip Koroy (aka EverythingApplePro) has revealed that the supersized new rear cameras across the iPhone 13 range are again different between the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, though a double-sized mic in the camera setup is likely to offer substantial audio improvements for both phones.

iPhone 13 Pro Vs iPhone 13 Pro Max Camera Differences

Koroy states that the iPhone 13 Pro camera lenses are going to be “ever so slightly smaller” than those on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, while the latter also features a fractionally larger LiDAR sensor. It is unknown what the technical differences will be at this stage, but Apple offered upgraded optics on iPhone 12 Pro Max last year. That was the first time Apple broke from feature parity between its two premium iPhones since the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in 2017, but it looks like it’s coming back again.

Supersized New iPhone 13 Pro Microphones

In addition to this, Koroy notes that Apple will make the rear microphone on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max much larger. The new mics measure 2.44mm across, more than double the 1.15mm in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Leaker Max Weinbach has previously claimed iPhone 13 Pro models will have notably clearer audio thanks to the introduction of beamforming technology. These larger mics strengthen this claim and consequently add credence to his promise of new video recording capabilities, including dramatically improved image stabilization and a Portrait Video Mode. Unfortunately, only Pro models will have this larger mic so it is unknown if iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini models will have these other video upgrades either.

Smaller iPhone 13 Pro Max Notch Visualised

Last, Koroy has attained an iPhone 13 Pro Max screen protector which shows off the circa 20% smaller notch that will feature on all new iPhone 13 models.

Koroy says a 40% reduction in the size of the VCSEL sensor used in Face ID is what finally allows the notch to shrink this year. Needless to say, the notch remains far bigger than the punch hole camera designs predominantly chosen by iPhone rivals, but Apple’s class leading facial recognition technology will more than make up for this with most iPhone fans.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Previous iPhone 13 leaks have also revealed next-gen 5G modems, all-new WiFi (deemed to be “the most disruptive boon for Wi-Fi users in the last 20 years), MagSafe upgrades and increased power efficiency (which bodes well for battery life). 120Hz ProMotion displays are also incoming but only for iPhone 13 Pro Models.

Interestingly, naming is one thing that remains a mystery (‘13’ seems unlikely given its association with bad luck) but we can expect Apple to clear this up soon, given production of these new iPhones is way ahead of schedule.
